After reading the article “I am not a story” by Galen Strawson, I decided that I do not agree with his argument. I feel that a narrative is a very helpful tool to help someone find their identity. I feel that everyone has a narrative in some form because it is a human tendency to make our lives into a cohesive story. We not only use narratives to help us find our personal identity, but we also use them to connect to others, make sense of events in our life and find a purpose to that meaning. In order to connect to others, we tend to tell stories that we have experienced that others experienced as well. Take for example, if I was telling a story about a car crash I witnessed, everyone has been in a car, or driven a car at some point so there is an automatic connection created when that story was told. Then we also use narratives to make sense of events in our life because we try to find meaning in everything. We retell our life stories in order to make sense of why that certain experience happened or what lesson we can use that experience to learn  from.  Personally I feel that narratives are extremely important in life. They develop relationships through connections, they help us think through our experiences and find meaning and purpose to events that happen to us. One personal example is that last year was my senior year of high school. I had been playing on the Varsity softball team all throughout high school and it was finally my senior year, plus I was elected captain. I was so excited for the season because it was finally “my year.” When it came to the Friday of tryouts, we were doing sprints in the gym and I fell and hit my knee so hard to the point where I couldn’t get up. Later I found out that I tore my PCL which would meant that I would basically be out for the season. My heart was broken. I kept asking myself “Why this season?” However, looking back on it today, it taught me a lot of lessons and only made me stronger. I worked hard through Physical therapy and was cleared to play the last few weeks of the season and I enjoyed every minute of it. This injury is not my entire life story but it made me humble and realize that I need to enjoy every minute of life.

  1. Audrey, I like that you included personal anecdotes. I think that you could even work with this paragraph in your final essay! I also agree to disagree with Strawson. I too believe that everyone has a narrative and the importance they play in life. Your statement about using narrative as a tool to help find your identity was interesting. I never really thought about that but I like it! I think that narratives, whether your own or someone else’s, can teach you so much.
