Selecting quotes for an essay has never really been a struggle for me personally. I always base my claim sentences off of what I can find for evidence in my sources. For example, in Essay 2 Final Draft, my claim was how “a metaphor is a figure of speech used in language to help explain a more complex idea, art acts as a metaphor to the subject of science.” Then, in order to back up my claim, I used a quote that I found in Jonah Lehrer’s article “The future of Science…is Art?” The quote I used said “abstract art lets us comprehend, at least a little bit, the incomprehensible.” This I related back to what I knew about metaphors and how they help us to understand things that are more complex.  I then continued to analyze the quote that I chose and explain “that complex ideas in science are better understood when art is used to help explain them. This shows how art acts as a metaphor does in science because it is proven that the use of metaphors in the English language allows people to understand more complex ideas and make connections between things that no one thought possible.” This quote along with my analysis of the quote was evidence that connected back to my thesis and supported my argument that art acted as a metaphor.
