Learning Outcome 5 & 6

Writing according to MLA format has always been a personal struggle for me. Through English 110, I feel that I have developed a much better understanding of how MLA formatting works. For example, in essay 2, I learned how to better introduce my authors and cite my sources in text. More specifically, in order to formally introduce the author Jonah Lehrer and quote him in my essay,  I explained how “Jonah Lehrer is an American author who studied neuroscience at Columbia University. In the article “The future of science… is art?” Lehrer states…” and then I added his quote. Because I already introduced who wrote the quote before, I didn’t have to insert parenthetical citations after the quote. Before English 110, I didn’t know that this type of in-text citation was allowed. I would always put parenthetical citations after quotes because thats what I thought was right. However after peer reviews, I was able to make local revisions and change those parenthetical citations to personal introductions of the authors that I quoted. I personally feel that I have gotten much better at following MLA guidelines through English 110 and I will be able to use this knowledge I gained in my future courses.
