Annotating for me is getting much easier since the first annotation assignment this semester. I feel that I am doing better at asking questions to the author about the context in the text as well as really taking my time to try to understand difficult concepts in the text that I find confusing.

  1. The text “Necessary Edges: Arts, Empathy, and Education” by Yo-yo Ma was about the importance of integrating arts and music into education today. Yo-yo Ma is an award winning Cellist and songwrite who wrote this essay in January of 2014 and published it on an online news and blog site called World-Today. In the essay, Ma advocated for STEAM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) where art is included in the education systems today. Before reading the essay itself, there was a completely separate biography about Yo-yo Ma explaining all of his awards and accomplishments which makes this essay seem very credible because of who it was written by.
  2. The circumstances that surround my personal reading experience are whether or not I personally believe in the integration of art into the education system, or if I have an opinion on that at all. My purpose for reading this text by Yo-yo Ma is to learn more about the importance of art. Ma uses many examples and a lot of information in order to try to convince his audience to believe in the importance of the integration of the arts.
  3. The lesson of this text is that art teaches people way more than what everyone thinks. Art should definitely be integrated into the education system because it makes connections that no one thought could be possible. Art is an essential piece for a well rounded student and a wholesome person.
